about

Being the fifth volume of pages from A Mendicant Hymnal, concerning The White Road.

'The White Road is everywhere. It is everything. We are on it, & we are of it. Go to sleep. Go to sleep dreaming of shadows moving along the White Road. Go to sleep without knowing if you are among the lost or the found, the living or the dead.' John Connolly, The White Road

John Connolly's novels remind me of a short time spent in Maine, as one journey was coming to an end & another one beginning. The recordings on this album were made in unusual, liminal places & when I thought of the White Road, I thought of Maine & how my time there was spent cycling in the wilderness, playing music out at sea as fireworks were readied in the July heat & most of all, how a journey of several thousand miles had come to an end in such a peaceful place, where the reversing falls of the Taunton River meet Frenchman Bay. These recordings were made below ground & by the sea in Salthill, Galway & along the mountain road to Carrowkeel megalithic cemetery (taking only the echoes from the horns we blew across the valley), places that have spoken of other journeys beginning & ending. Maybe these pieces are taking only the echoes of my memories of that time. Still I can hear them, friends swimming in the lake on Mount Desert Island, gulls swooping over Schoodic Point, the ghostly sounds we heard that night in Hancock & all the goodbyes that followed... deep below the earth & the sea's roar & high on the mountain path to ancient graves, moving along the White Road...

'An eerie loveliness that should really be soundtracking a Werner Herzog film; indeed Popol Vuh’s work provides a useful reference point as, similar to Vuh, the music herein is almost religious in its solemnity and grace.' The Active Listener
